Environmental efforts and certifications

Our clients set environmental requirements for our operations. However, we don’t stop there – we actively impose additional environmental standards on ourselves.

The vessels in the archipelago traffic run on diesel fuel of environmental class 1 and HVO – hydrotreated vegetable oil. The ships are connected to shore power during stops.

We also focus on sustainability in our cafés and restaurants.

Sustainable cruising for a better environment

Our ships are equipped with an analytical tool called BlueFlow, which tracks fuel consumption. The captain can monitor fuel usage in real time and review historical data. Since its implementation a few years ago, fuel consumption has decreased as the captain receives support to sail in an efficient manner while still maintaining the schedule.

Efficient ships

Blidösundsbolaget actively works on upgrading and developing its ships for the best possible performance. The majority of our 17 own ships are equipped with engines that have the highest possible exhaust cleaning, equivalent to IMO Tier III standards. The vessels are designed with simplicity and efficiency as key principles. We focus on finding solutions that can be standardized while also working toward the goal of a more efficient and sustainable fleet.

Even though several of our ships are older, they have hull shapes and displacements that outperform newly built ships in the same segment. By developing well-built ships at their core, we can sustainably and resource-efficiently develop archipelago traffic.

Through active collaborations with our suppliers and partners, we participate in the development of future technologies for passenger ships propulsion. Examples of this include:

  • Development of new hybrid technology on our ship Rex
  • Testing a new engine type on our ship Dux

  • Trial with the world’s first electric hydrofoil passenger ship

We are currently in a phase where we will launch several development projects to work with our partners to find solid and proven solutions, leading towards the goal of a completely fossil-free fleet at a reasonable cost.
